Intumescent coatings for structural steel.

Fire-rated systems on exposed steel, applied and documented so the rating holds up to the inspector.

What the work is

Thin-film intumescent coatings give exposed structural steel a one, two, or three hour fire rating without wrapping it in board or spray fireproofing. Under heat the film expands into a char that insulates the steel. Architects specify it where the structure stays visible: arenas, lobbies, schools, healthcare, retail, and parking structures.

The rating is only as good as the paperwork behind it. Every listed assembly ties a specific product, primer, film thickness, and topcoat to a specific steel section size. Getting the film on the steel is the easy part. Proving it is the job.

How Corazon runs it

  • Submittals matched to the listing. Product, primer, and topcoat submitted against the UL or Intertek design named in the spec, with section-by-section thickness schedules before the first coat goes on.
  • Surface preparation and primer compatibility. Shop primers verified against the manufacturer's approved list, or removed and replaced where they are not.
  • Film thickness logged per member. Wet and dry film readings taken and recorded by member, not by area, so the inspector and the owner get a log that maps to the framing plan.
  • Third-party inspection coordinated. Hold points scheduled with the owner's special inspector so nothing gets covered before it is read.
  • Closeout for the AHJ. Thickness logs, product data, and the listing in one package for the authority having jurisdiction and the owner's binder.

Where it goes

Interior-rated and exterior-rated systems for exposed columns, beams, trusses, and roof deck framing. New construction and retrofit, including occupied buildings where work runs nights and phases.

Recent example: the roof deck and structural steel at Reed Green Coliseum in Hattiesburg. See it on the Work section.
